TODAY is the last day to register for the Gatton Alumni Reunion on May 19th and 20th!

We can’t wait to have you back at Gatton in just 9 days- details will be going out to everyone who has registered later this week, including reunion locations for the Classes of 2008, 2013, and 2018. You’ll also have the opportunity to suggest affinity groups, and get more info about the Scavenger Hunt and other sessions.

The short answer is: no! I have heard this quest

The short answer is: no!

I have heard this question from several Gatton Alumni who aren’t sure if they are old enough to benefit from a Reunion, or if they will feel out of place. But just like our Alumni Dinners- where new connections are made, older alumni give advice and perspective to younger alumni, and you can always a bring a friend with you if you’re feeling unsure- we want everyone to feel welcome and get something out of the experience!

Our breakout sessions on Saturday morning will be a big part of that: you will have dedicated time with other alumni who are around the same age as you in your Life Era sessions, with alumni who are in the same field as you which is great for networking, and with alumni who have similar interests in our professor sessions.

If you’re still feeling unsure, grab a friend to attend with or reach out to me with your questions! (And if you can’t afford the registration fee- email me! Ashley.Taylor@wku.edu We will work it out.)

The Gatton Academy Envirothon Teams do it again! Both the Junior and Senior teams are headed to State Competition May 17-18 at the North Central 4-H Camp in Carlisle, Kentucky after qualifying at the Envirothon East/West Regionals. Congratulations and great work, Automatons!

Senior Team (Above) was the overall highest-scoring team at Regionals: Kaden Yonts, Amir Campbell, Thorin Bowman, Dunil Kasturiratna, and Nishu Anekere.

Junior Team (below) scored highest in Soils: Atiana Spivey, Amelie Fuentes, Parmeshvar Prakash, Gianna Claros, and Allison Dixon.

It's always wonderful to have groups of students visiting Gatton! We spent the entire day on Tuesday with students from Moss Middle School. During their visit, they toured Dr. Keith Phillips's research lab with @wkubiology, toured campus, ate at Fresh Foods, and learned all about Gatton! #GattonAcademy

Following dinner there will be a Gatton-style competition for bragging rights and prizes once you return to Florence Schneider. We have had a blast meeting up with so many of our alumni in the past year as we attended conferences and events everywhere from Providence to Louisville to Seattle- now it’s your turn to come to us! Alumni, join us for our first Reunion Weekend on May 19th and 20th- we’ll start with dinner on Friday night, and fill the next 30 hours with all sorts of events and activities. Registration is required and costs $50, which includes 2 meals, numerous snacks, and all activities. Please register no later than May 1st! See you there!

To continue our research theme this week, here's a $To continue our research theme this week, here's a behind-the-scenes look at some of the work students presented. Mia West ('23), Mykah Carden ('24), and Gracie Veith ('24) have been working with the @crawford_hydrology and digging into cave and karst research this Spring. Mia and Mykah have been working in the field with Dr. Pat Kambesis to conduct hydrogeologic inventories and groundwater tracing while Gracie has been training extensively in CHL laboratory techniques. Photos are from a florescent dye injection conducted to explore urban groundwater issues. Izzy McIntosh ('23) has been conducting research comparing the sugar content in sap from a variety of sugar maples on the WKU preserve to determine what factors affect the sugar content in different trees such as size or age. Her work is conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Stokes with @wkubiology. Photos display Izzy collecting sap that will then be analyzed using a refractometer to determine the sugar content. #GattonAcademy #Gatton2023 #Gatton2024$

54 of our students presented research this past weekend at the Student Scholar Showcase at Western Kentucky University. Altogether, they put together 32 Poster Presentations and 15 Oral Presentations displaying research they've completed through coursework, faculty-mentored research, and Summer internships. #GattonAcademy #Gatton2023 #Gatton2024
