Arjun Kanthawar

Hello, my name is Arjun Kanthawar, and I am a senior from London, Kentucky. Before Gatton, I attended North Laurel High School where I was very involved with my tennis team and other extracurricular activities. I learned about Gatton when I was attending VAMPY here on WKU’s campus. Ever since I heard about it, I knew I wanted to come. Here at Gatton, I’ve made so many new friends, and the tight-knit community is amazing. The support that we receive from each other is awesome. I’ve been able to study abroad, research areas that I’m interested in, and expand my interests in math and science. In my free time, I enjoy playing ultimate Frisbee and basketball with other Gatton students.

I was fortunate to be able to study abroad in England this past summer, which was an amazing experience. Our class studied English literature for three weeks while visiting historical sites. One of the most unique things about Gatton is the abundance of research opportunities that are available. Over the summer, I completed a research internship grant (RIG) with the WKU Math Department where I studied ways to mathematically model the healing of chronic wounds. I have been able to travel to many different places to present my research.

Junior year was extremely fun, and I am really anxious for senior year to begin. I am very excited to meet the juniors, and I know this year will be great. Overall, I am excited for senior year and to be an Avatar.

Today, we left Harlaxton Manor bright and early at 8:00 a.m. We headed towards Stratford-upon-Avon, England, home of William Shakespeare. We first visited Warwick Castle, a medieval castle that was built in 1068. The castle is rich in history surrounding England’s royal families and wars. I was able to see a trebuchet launch a rock, and the castle had many species of eagles including the bald eagle!

After Warwick castle, we headed for Anne Hathaway’s (Shakespeare’s wife) cottage. Her descendants lived in that home for over 13 generations! After looking around Hathaway’s home, we visited the church where Shakespeare was buried (fun fact: it was recently discovered that Shakespeare’s head has been stolen from his grave) and then the home where he was born. We were able to see the actual bed where Shakespeare was born. After visiting these sites, we were free to eat dinner and then roam around Stratford-upon-Avon for a couple of hours. We reached Harlaxton a little before 9:30 p.m., and everyone got ready for another day of class tomorrow.

Today was the first day that we didn’t have to do anything before 9 A.M, and I think we were all thankful for that extra sleep. We took a train from Paddington station in London to Oxford, England where we walked to Christ Church College, a combination of a college of Oxford University and an Anglican cathedral. Our group stopped to have a picnic at a large clearing near the church. Later, we toured some of the colleges in Oxford and learned about their rich history. The traditions and buildings of the colleges were incredible! Oxford’s campus was one of the most beautiful ones I have ever seen!

We saw many of the areas where The Harry Potter movies were filmed, and we learned about the origins of Alice in Wonderland. After our tour, we walked along the streets of Oxford before getting on a train to head back to London. Many decided to grab another snack before heading back to the Nutford House to prepare for class tomorrow. Our stay in London is coming to a close. Only one more day until we head to Harlaxton!
