The Gatton Academy offers a variety of activities and traditions that appeal to all of the students’ interests. My niche is fantasy football so of course, I was ecstatic when Pokey invited me to join the Staff vs. Seniors Fantasy Football league. I gathered five of my friends to join me in the conquest of defeating the staff. I knew it would be an easy challenge but I wanted to participate nonetheless. I still recall inquiring Pokey about a fantasy football league on Orientation Day the summer before my junior year. To my disappointment, I was informed that it was only for seniors so I patiently waited for my chance. However, as an incoming junior, I failed to recognize the sense of community that came with a simple fantasy football league.

Now that I have been a part of the Gatton community for over a year, I recognize the connection that is formed on a peer and staff basis. As an Avatar, I have developed a close relationship with Zack and get to face him in the league. On the Harlaxton trip, I became closely acquainted with Pokey and Alex Sorrels by playing Snooker and Croquet. I am now able to hand them another defeat back at Gatton. I am even able to compete against my current Residential Counselor, D, and small group leader, Alex Fahnders. The Staff vs. Seniors Fantasy League has provided me with a conduit to participate in a common activity with my peers and staff members for the fall semester.

We just concluded week two and Carson, D, Zack, and I are undefeated. I look forward to the matchup between two juggernauts this weekend as I face Carson’s overachieving team. Despite the fact that my parents advise me to focus on college applications instead of football, I rely on sports, especially fantasy, to be my escape. In order to combat the stress of my senior year at Gatton, I utilize my love and passion for sports to keep me grounded. It might be an addiction at this point considering the fact I participate in twenty-two leagues, listen to multiple sports podcasts, and manage a fantasy website. I anticipate the remainder of this season and hope that future Gatton students will have the opportunity to defeat the staff in the Seniors vs. Staff Fantasy Football League.

Greetings! My name is Devin Davis and I am a senior from Georgetown – home of the Toyota plant and north of the Kentucky Horse Park. Prior to coming to Gatton, I attended Scott County High School where I played soccer, was on the Academic Team, and volunteered for the Scott County Teen Court. I also served on the Gifted & Talented council, Advanced Placement Advisory Council, and the Kentucky Department of Education Commissioner’s Student Council.

Gatton had been on my radar ever since I discovered it while attending a Duke TIP recognition ceremony in seventh grade. Wanting to study engineering, I always felt as if it would be a perfect fit for me and my academic future. Gatton is a unique place that offers opportunities for students to thrive. One of my favorite opportunities thus far has been studying abroad at Harlaxton. While at Harlaxton, we were able to delve into English Literature with the vibrant Dr. Rutledge. We were able to tour amazing sites such as Stonehenge and Warwick Castle, watch a Shakespearean play at the Globe Theatre, and immerse ourselves in a foreign culture.

Another amazing opportunity that we have as high school students is the ability to conduct research. Last semester, I began working alongside Dr. Morteza Nurcheshmeh to analyze high-speed metal forming technologies using high-strength steels and low-dense metals in order to reduce vehicle weight and fuel consumption.

I am incredibly proud of this school. Not only do we learn each day from outstanding WKU professors, but the Gatton staff works diligently to create an optimum learning environment and prioritizes each one of us and our ultimate goals. The students and staff have developed an amazing support system and community. We are students that are very similar despite our diverse backgrounds. We all work to accomplish our goals, strive to be active members on campus and in the community, and even struggle through CPS. Gatton has provided me with lifelong friends and a family that will forever welcome me. This is why I am excited to serve as a Gatton Avatar this year. I want to share my Gatton story and my appreciation to be able to call this special place home.

To kick off our third and final week abroad, we visited Warwick Castle and Stratford-upon-Avon. We departed at 8 a.m. and rode for an hour and a half until we arrived at Warwick Castle. Warwick Castle is a medieval castle that was constructed in 1068 which has now been transformed into an astonishing attraction. After we entered, our group took on the challenge of the corn maze. After reaching all of the checkpoints, we swiftly discovered the exit and completed the maze. We then proceeded to trek to the top of the fortress where we were greeted with an amazing view overlooking the grounds of the castle. It was here that we watched as the large trebuchet launched a rock across the open field. Afterward, we partook in an excursion to explore the conservatory and castle. We gandered at the medieval architecture, pleasing flowers, and elegant peacocks.

After lunch, we were on our way to Stratford-upon-Avon where we stopped at Anne Hathaway’s cottage. We were able to explore the residence where the Hathaway family lived for 13 generations. It was a very unique home because it contained 12 rooms – an extraordinary amount for that time. Next, we voyaged to the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon, the Holy Trinity Church. This place is the home of Shakespeare’s final resting place. After viewing his burial site, we were informed that grave robbers are believed to have stolen his head from the grave! We then traveled to Shakespeare’s birthplace. We explored his home and marveled at the exact bed where he was born. After exiting, we stopped to witness street performers bring Shakespeare’s writing to life. They reenacted scenes from Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet and recited numerous sonnets. We were then granted free time to eat dinner and explore Stratford-upon-Avon. After visiting a local diner and café, we returned to the coach. As the evening concluded, we arrived back at Harlaxton Manor where students began to study for our quiz tomorrow. We then crawled into bed after another adventurous day of exploration in England.

Today, we arose bright and early after a full day of travel and exploration yesterday. We acquired breakfast in a packed cafeteria with other students as we anticipated our second quiz. At the conclusion of our quiz, we reviewed the significance of William Shakespeare and dove into our analysis of Hamlet. We covered the Humors Theory, Revenge Tragedies, and answered the question “Is Hamlet a Tragic Hero?”

After our three hour class period, we were given the afternoon to explore the city of London. All 49 of us developed plans and dispersed across the city. My friends and I decided to tour the Science Museum and the National History Museum. We were able to experience scientific artifacts such as pieces of the Moon, old European automobiles, and an iron lung from 1953. We were also able to marvel at various gemstones and dinosaur skeletons. It was an incredible way to immerse ourselves in British culture and become acquainted with their nation’s STEM information and storied history.

After a meal at a local café, we were on our way to view Hamlet at the iconic Globe Theatre. After riding the tube, we walked across the Millennium Bridge over the River Thames. We were going to be viewing the play as groundlings for the night. After receiving our tickets, we anxiously waited in line and rushed to claim positions next to the stage once the doors opened. The play was spectacular and maintained the literary aspects that we had discussed in class earlier that day. It was a unique experience to see the play that we had read over the past month and had analyzed during class come to life. This transformed this performance of a Shakespearean play into a real-life learning experience. After the conclusion of the play at 10:30, we rushed to the tube station with tired legs. It was a busy day filled with a new world of adventures that 49 Gatton Academy students were able to discover.
