First Closed Weekend

This past weekend, Friday, Aug. 31st – Monday, Sept. 3rd, was our first closed weekend of the school year. Closed weekends occur one weekend a month, and it’s a time for us to go home and see our family and friends. You can, of course, go home any weekend that you’d like, but not everybody can easily do that, so closed weekends are here to make sure everybody leaves and visits their family regularly. If you’re from the east, and having your parents drive all the way to and from Bowling Green twice in one weekend is a hassle, you can take the Gatton-provided shuttle to and from Versailles at the beginning and ending of the weekend. I’m from eastern Kentucky, so my drive is nearly 5 hours long—meaning I definitely utilize the shuttle.

I was particularly excited about this month’s closed weekend because it was the same weekend as my home high school’s Homecoming football game and dance. I managed to get back home Friday during the football game’s halftime, so I got to see who won Homecoming Queen and watch our football team win the game 41-7. I then went home to visit with my family and say hi to my dogs. The next day, on Saturday, I got ready and went to my school’s homecoming dance. It was a chance for me to catch up with a lot of people from my home school that I don’t normally talk to. It was certainly no Gatton dance, but it was pretty fun. I spent the rest of the weekend catching up on homework and sleep, and spending time with my family. Then Monday afternoon I headed back to Versailles and got on the shuttle to go back to Gatton, getting ready for the next week of classes.

Hey guys,

My name’s Shay. I’m a Gatton Academy senior in the graduating class of 2019. I’m from a small town in Lawrence County, a place you probably haven’t heard of in far eastern Kentucky, bordering West Virginia. I love nature and my dogs, and my biggest pastimes are playing cards and climbing trees. I came to Gatton to explore my interests more and meet people with the same passions as me.

Coming to the Gatton Academy has been great for me because it’s provided me with educational opportunities that I wouldn’t have had available at my home high school. The chance to take college classes on a college campus with actual university professors was something that I couldn’t pass up. The first thing I heard about Gatton that really made me want to come was the Harlaxton study abroad trip. I knew as soon as it was described to me that it was something I wanted to do. I went to Harlaxton over the summer, and it was definitely worth coming to Gatton for. I’ve also had the opportunity to explore my interests and figure out what I want to do as a career. I discovered that I like electrical engineering and have taken classes for it, something I would have never been able to do back home. I’ve not had the opportunity to become invested in a research project yet, but I’m going to try to this semester.

One of my favorite parts about Gatton so far is that it’s given me the chance to meet new, like-minded people. My passions and belief systems were not in line with most of the people that I knew at home, which made it difficult to make good friends. Instead, I was just friends with “the smart kids,” even if we didn’t have anything else in common. Everybody here is academically oriented, so I was able to make friends with people that I was similar to and got along with. “Being smart” is no longer my only important personality trait. I have real, close friends that will last a lifetime, and I’m living in a community that accepts me and embraces each other’s differences, not just their similarities.

Before I moved into Gatton last year, I decided to reinvent myself. I was in a slump at home; I didn’t like who I was or who I had been, and I felt like I could never get past people’s perceptions of me to be who I wanted to be. But at Gatton, nobody knew me, so I could be whoever and whatever I wanted. I got the opportunity to change up my look, my personality, and even my name—I went by Shaylon at home. I’m so much more comfortable with and proud of who I am since I’ve been here. I’ve also learned a lot about myself over the past year. Gatton has really been a place for me to find myself and I’m beyond appreciative of that.

So I guess there’s a bit about me and my experience at Gatton so far. You’ll be hearing more from me over the next year, so goodbye for now!

Until next time,

Shay Moore

Wow, I can’t believe today was our last day at Harlaxton! Time has flown by so fast. Pretty soon, we’ll be waking up at 4:30 to get on the coach and head to the airport. These past three weeks have been an amazing experience and I’m so glad I went, and I’m sure all of my classmates would say the same.

Today was our last day, meaning it was also finals day. We all stayed up studying last night, preparing for our test in the morning. The final consisted of three parts: the first part consisted of 70 multiple choice questions about poetry, the second part asked us to analyze a poem, and the third part wanted us to write an essay about three of the places we had been to while apart from the group. We all got up and went down to the classroom at 9 to take the final, and as we each got done, we turned in our test and left class. Most of us either went to lunch or went straight back to bed after the exam. Once everybody was done, we all started getting together with our friends to see what we wanted to do on our last day.

For my last day, I got together with a group of friends and rode a train to Nottingham, where we spent most of the day. We went on a tour of the caves of Nottingham, which are all manmade and have been dug over the past several hundred years. After our tour, we walked through town and stopped to eat at a British chain restaurant called Nando’s. The food was delicious, and when we all got done, we headed to the train station to ride back to Harlaxton.

Once we got back to Harlaxton, the group separated and we all went and did our own thing. A couple of us, myself included, walked around Harlaxton, exploring the grounds. We did this for a couple hours before it was time to head back inside and finish packing up our things. Then we all headed to bed to prepare for the long coach ride and flights in the morning. I believe I’m speaking for all of us when I say we wished we could stay longer, but at the same time, we were exhausted and ready to come home and see our families. Harlaxton has been a once in a lifetime opportunity that I’m sure we’ll all cherish forever.

Today was our last day in London before we depart for Harlaxton. After a long day of touring Oxford yesterday, we were all ready for some free time today. Class was from 9:00-12:00, and the rest of the day was ours until we had to come back for curfew at 11:00. At the beginning of class, we had a quiz on three short stories and their authors, and during class we discussed those stories, as well as points of view within writing. At the end, Professor Rutledge read the short story “Clay” aloud and explained what things meant as he went along.

After class, everyone found a group and went their own directions into the vast city of London. Izze, Sereniti, Isabel, and I left the Nutford House, stopped for coffee at Costa, and then got on the tube and rode to Camden Town in London. We ate some delicious pizza at a small local Italian place, and then we went to the Camden market. We bought some “Mind the Gap” t-shirts, as well as some decorative pins and other souvenirs. Then we walked around and shopped at several local thrift stores. At 5:00, we rode the tube back to the Nutford House to take a break and put our purchases in our rooms.

While at the Nutford, we rested and turned in the final drafts of our first essays, and then Devin and Zane joined us and we rode the tube to Oxford Street. We walked around for a while looking for a place to eat until we finally decided on a restaurant called The Diner. Isabel and I ate veggie burgers, Devin and Zane got wings, Sereniti ate a hotdog, and Izze got some of the best banana pancakes any of us have ever tasted. After we devoured our meals, we strolled over to a multi-level H&M, where we browsed until it was time to head back for curfew. We hopped on the tube and rode back to Edgeware Road. My friends and I arrived at the Nutford House around 10:30 and hung out playing cards until we needed to go to bed.

Today was my favorite day in London, and it was definitely a good note to leave on. We’ve all loved the city, but we’re also excited to depart for Harlaxton tomorrow to explore the manor, play croquet, and do anything else we can get our hands on. All that’s left to say is goodbye!
